Perlis e-state bangunkan ekonomi berasas pengetahuan

Menteri Besar, Datuk Dr. Md.

Bhd., MCM Technologies Sdn. Bhd., CENS (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., VDSL Network Sdn. Bhd. dan GI Solutions Gateway Sdn. Bhd.

INFO: Idea yg Astro tak mahu kita tahu tapi salah le…

Pirating Microsoft Windows will get you a life sentence

THE LAND of the Free is considering bringing in a new thought crime which is thinking about software or music piracy.
Details of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2007, will criminalise “attempting” to infringe copyright.

It means that you can go to prison for one to 10 years for trying to copy a music CD and failing. In another move you could get life in prison for using a pirated copy of Windows on your home PC.

It will be possible for the FBI to get a wire tap to see if you are using pirated software. Anyone who uses counterfeit products who “recklessly causes or attempts to cause death” can be sent down for life. The Justice Department says an example of this will be a hospital which uses pirated software instead of paying for it.

Homeland Security will be allowed to use its terrorist search powers on behalf of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It would notify the RIAA when its sniffers detected “unauthorised fixations of the sounds, or sounds and images, of a live musical performance” are found.

Other copyright holders will not get the benefit of this service. According to News.com, it is unclear how these new laws will be received by the Democrats. While you would think the fact that Gonzales is as popular amongst them as the Boston Strangler, they have a lot of chums in the entertainment industry who think that pirates should be sent to the gas chamber.

Nice to know that the world’s richest country has such a great sense of perspective. More here

New Macbooks are already out of date

APPLE RELEASED a new line of Macbook notebooks yesterday, but the hardware is already behind the times.
The chaps from Cappuccino upgraded the entry-level machines to 2GHz and 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors, made 1GB of RAM standard and upgraded the hard disks to a maximum 200GB.

But there’s no sign of Santa Rosa, strangely enough. You’d think that a new Intel-based laptop announcement coming straight after Intel unveils its next-gen platform would be, you know, next-gen. It seems not. Jobs’ mob like to march to their own drum beat, and so it seems that the Apple faithful won’t be getting their Santa Rosa fix for a while yet.

In fact, it seems likely that the Macbook Pro will be the first to get the treatment, given that we can now rule out another Macbook refresh for six months or so. Spare a thought for the poor Mac Mini, which is still cronking along on last year’s low-end hardware with narry an upgrade in Isight.

Gates claims 40 million Vista sales a success

BILL GATES IS quite adept at spinning defeat from jaws of victory, and he almost gets away with it due to the overly tame press. Lets look at the latest example of failure spun as victory, his WinHec speech.
The headline is simple, 40 million copies sold. Wow, we rox0rz! This is twice as fast as the XP adoption rate. What he didn’t mention is that sales of PCs have more than doubled since XP came out. Silly Vole, no statistical cookie.

The problem? Well, PCs sell at about 60 million units a quarter, and everyone we talk to expects sales of around 240-245 million units in 2007. Vista went on sale at the end of November for corporate customers, and one would expect a fair chunk of sales there from pent-up demand.

Well, maybe MS was just kidding about the ‘Wow’ stuff, the only part that floored me was the antagonistic licensing, crushing DRM, and borderline malware embedded. OK, so maybe the pent-up demand side is overblown.

In any case, there were corporate sales for over two months before release, and another two and a half months of true sales. Add in all the Vista free upgrade coupons that were cashed in, and you have a lot of sales outside the normal two and a half months’ worth.

A few people are smart enough to avoid Vista, but most people are forced to buy it. Microsoft makes it very hard not to. In the end, you probably should have at least one copy of Vista sold per PC, quite possibly a little more.

So, you should be at about 20 million sales a month, for two and a half months, minus about five per cent for those smart enough to avoid the software, plus ten per cent for all the other non-bundled sales combined. I would guess that makes it (20 million by 2.5 by 1.05 = 52.5) around 50 million units sold.

Microsoft is now claiming 40 million units as a major win? Does anyone else sense something wrong?

It’s a big number but not as big as it might be if the software was any good.
